ICT

The Computing curriculum centres around the use of computers to mould creative, digitally literate global citizens of an increasingly technical and interconnected world. The skills which underpin the curriculum and allow students to thrive include the development of ideas, evaluation and critical reflection in order to communicate information effectively. The wider world and the use of ICT is discussed and evaluated throughout, students are aware of the relevance and application of the skills introduced, developed and practised, and are able to articulate this.

A key aspect of the Nidderdale Computing curriculum is online safety and as this is an ever-changing message, staff will be aware of the challenges that the internet brings and will develop up-to-date key messages for students. Computer security and the individual digital footprints are evaluated as part of the curriculum. Responsible use of digital platforms should be incorporated into lessons and students will be encouraged to discuss strategies for safe online use.

Computing has deep links with Mathematics, Science and Design Technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. This range will include spreadsheets and databases, computer graphics and web publishing.

The Key Stage Three Computing curriculum will allow understanding and application of abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation. Students will analyse problems in computational terms and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems. Students will develop their understanding of different technologies to solve problems throughout.

As students progress to Key Stage Four they have the opportunity to follow the Edexcel BTEC Technology Award in Creative Media Production. Students will develop their experience and understanding of digital media products, to hone skills in production and to produce digital media products for assessment. Engagement in the skills and application in the Computing curriculum will enable students to develop their own global citizenship in the wider world.
