Mental Health and Wellbeing

MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING

At Nidderdale High School, we recognise that good mental health and wellbeing are essential for students to feel safe, happy, and able to learn. We are committed to creating a supportive environment where students feel listened to, understood, and supported when they need help.

We encourage students to build positive self-care habits as part of everyday life and ensure that appropriate support is available when challenges arise.

Our Commitment

We are committed to:

  • Listening to students
  • Working in partnership with families
  • Providing early, appropriate support
  • Creating a culture where mental health is talked about openly and respectfully

No concern is ever too small.

How We Support Students in School

We take a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing, which includes:

  • Trusted relationships with form tutors, teachers, Heads of Key Stage, and pastoral staff
  • Access to in-school counselling and wellbeing support
  • Regular PSHE and assemblies focused on emotional wellbeing, resilience, and healthy coping strategies
  • Early identification and support for students who may be struggling
  • Close communication with parents and carers where appropriate

Students are never expected to cope alone — help is always available.

What Students Can Do If They Are Struggling

If a student is finding things difficult emotionally, they can:

  • Speak to their form tutor
  • Speak to a member of the pastoral team
  • Speak to any member of staff
  • Email or ask a trusted adult to email support@nidderdale.mlt.co.uk

Students can raise concerns for themselves or for a friend. All worries are taken seriously.

Support for Parents and Carers

Parents and carers know their children best. If you are concerned about your child’s emotional wellbeing, you are encouraged to:

  • Contact your child’s form tutor in the first instance
  • Email support@nidderdale.mlt.co.uk if you feel your child needs additional pastoral or wellbeing support

Parents and carers can raise concerns on behalf of their child, particularly if the student is reluctant or unsure how to explain how they are feeling.

External Support and Online Resources

We also encourage students and families to access trusted external support services.

Kooth provides free, safe and anonymous online mental health support for young people. Students can access:

  • Live chat with qualified counsellors
  • Self-help tools and forums
  • Articles and wellbeing activities

Kooth is available outside of school hours and does not require a referral.
